Scitech technology provides an innovative new method to collect and rectify electromagnetic radiation through the IR and into the visible. The sub-20nm region is the emerging technology area for the next generation of high-performance devices. These devices require extending the limits of function, design and fabrication to new levels of precision and control to exploit the latest technologies. The ability to capture and rectify the full spectrum of wavelengths have broad and transformative implications well beyond one application or device. Due to physical constraints, conventional Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) diodes play a limited role where high frequency rectification is required. The difficulty is the development of large area inexpensive sheets of efficient rectennas still requires suitable rectifying diodes that can operate efficiently throughout the regime. Today’s Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) diodes can rectify at slightly higher frequencies, however their RC times are constant which limits their operation. It’s becoming evident tiny antennas called rectennas (a combination antenna/rectifier) have the potential for high conversion efficiencies and low fabrication costs. They can be useful for multiple applications such as IR detectors, high frequency rectifiers and energy harvesting devices. Scitech rectenna technology is different from others because: • We eliminate semiconductors, diodes and bandgap constraints • Rectification takes place due to geometry, materials and sizing • Operation from IR through the visible • Smaller RC times, no tunneling constraints or device temperature restrictions • Fabricated with earth abundant, recyclable metallic materials Our technology is based on materials, spacing and the geometric property of the antenna tip or edge. The “tip” or edge in conjunction with the collector anode acts as both the absorber of the incident radiation and the rectifier which constitutes a tunnel junction; there is a difference between the potential barriers for forward and reverse bias leading to asymmetric tunneling resulting in a rectified DC current. Rectification occurs across a wide breadth of frequencies, something unattainable in today’s devices. This output power can be delivered to a load, charge batteries, or stored in capacitors. Applications can include: photovoltaic devices and photodetectors, wide-bandgap sensors: IOT, M2M & M2P, optical antennas, plasmonic integrated circuits, plasmonic color pixels for CMOS compatible imaging & bio-sensing, metamaterials, waste heat harvesting, IR sensing and imaging, medical and chemical sensors and the transmission and reception of information and energy at optical frequencies.
