The mission of Secondary1st is to help fund research into the prevention, diagnosis and causes of secondary (metastatic) breast cancer and the development of more effective treatments.
Secondary breast cancer is breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
Approximately five in every 100 people with breast cancer already have secondaries when their first cancer in diagnosed.
It is estimated that another 35 out of 100 people with primary breast cancer will develop secondary breast cancer within the first 10 years of the first diagnosis.
Currently it is not curable.
Finding a cure means everything. It means a diagnosis is no longer the end. It means those who have had breast cancer do not live in constant fear of its return.
What we do is quite simple. Thanks to the continuing support of our wonderful donors and amazing fundraisers we raise money to fund research projects, supporting talented teams and individuals working at the cutting edge of scientific discovery.
In 2021 we made grants to two separate ongoing research projects:
- One led by Dr Seth Coffelt at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research at Glasgow University. Dr Coffelt and his team are studying the relationship between cancer and the immune system.
- The other provided funding for a PhD student working in the team led by Dr Klaus Pors at the Institute of Cancer Therapeutics at the University of Bradford in a project investigating the enzymes which metabolise certain drugs
In 2022, we hope to help fund a project with Southampton University and we are also proud that we were able to support the research team led by Dr Claire Wells at King’s College London
