European airspace is divided into Flight Information Regions, which are subdivided into sectors to provide safe separation services to aircraft moving through the airspace. Radically changing this to a flight-centred structure, without reference to geographical sectors, opens up the possibility of distributing traffic more evenly and avoiding productivity losses in underutilised sectors.
The Flight Centric ATC (FCA) project is developing a flight-centric concept for an implementation in most parts of Europe (ECAC-wide) in medium-density traffic areas, taking into account existing national boundaries.
The project includes the development of deployment scenarios for the same area, consistent with the limitations of the very high frequency spectrum for voice communications. The benefits of the concept in each of the deployment scenarios will then be analyzed, based on prior research done in SESAR2020.
During the project, the team will conduct various validation exercises to close the remaining gaps and demonstrate the high maturity of the flight-centric technology in relevant environments (Technology Readiness Level 6).
The project consortium consists of DLR (project coordinator), AgentFly Technologies, CRIDA (affiliated partner of ENAIRE), ENAIRE, EUROCONTROL, INDRA, INECO (affiliated partner of ENAIRE), INTEGRA and UkSATSE.
