Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (SGO)

Established in 1913, Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (SGO) is a leading research institute under the University of Oulu, specialising in geophysical and space science. Located in Finnish Lapland, north of the Arctic Circle, SGO operates a broad network of observation stations across Finland and beyond. SGO conducts long-term monitoring of geomagnetic fields, cosmic rays, seismic activity, and ionospheric conditions—providing critical data to support research on Earth’s space environment, Arctic climate, and geophysical processes. The observatory plays an active role in international collaborations and develops advanced scientific instruments for space weather and atmospheric studies. A major recent initiative is the LappiSat program, which focuses on building Lapland’s first satellite. LappiSat-1 will measure auroras and magnetic variations in near-Earth space, while also strengthening regional expertise in space technology and satellite development.
