Shanghai Arbitration Commission (hereinafter “SHAC”) is a permanent arbitral institution established by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government in 1995 and registered with the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Justice. As one of the first seven pioneering arbitral institutions set up in China, the SHAC has been enabling significant influence of arbitration as a method of alternative dispute resolution. Since its establishment, SHAC has administrated over 40,000 cases accumulatively with a total amount in dispute of approximately RMB 200 billion, and has facilitated parties to resolve commercial disputes through independent, impartial, professional and efficient arbitration services.
In July 2021, the new governing body of the SHAC (the 7th Commission) was established through the appointments by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government in accordance with relevant laws and regulations. The 7th Commission will endeavor to navigate the SHAC to a leading arbitral institution in the region.
