About Sheffield iGEM

Sheffield iGEM is an interdisciplinary team of students from the University of Sheffield put together to compete in the annual iGEM (International Genetically-Engineered Machine) competition. Our 2022 project, ‘rEvolver’, aimed to develop a modular, plasmid-based toolkit for continuous in vivo directed evolution, and was accompanied by a DIY bioreactor for automated continuous culture. In addition to being awarded a gold medal for the overall project, our team’s bioreactor design saw us nominated for the ‘Best Hardware’ special prize at the iGEM Grand Jamboree event in Paris. Our project for 2024 aims to utilize AI to enhance the novel phosphatase PafA to extract phosphate from wastewater.
