SMO stands for Single Mine Origin. A new global standard, established in 2017 to offer fully traceable, responsibly sourced gold, at scale. SMO Gold is only sourced from ‘member mines’, those operating responsibly and with transparency, adhering to the highest ESG standards, who are independently audited, annually. Now jewellers, investors and customers can trace the origin of their SMO Gold to the source mine through a QR code or batch number. SMO represents Traceability, Responsibility & Transparency. By collating and analysing disaggregated ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) data from mining companies’ annual reports, sustainability reports, and other publicly available sources, the SMO ESG Benchmark offers ground-breaking insights into the gold industry’s responsible mining credentials.
