About SNOWCOP
SNOWCOP is a Horizon Europe EUSPA project aimed at improving Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) estimation in the Andes. The project started in October 2024 and has a duration of three years. The project will produce high-resolution maps (50 m) of SWE and ice melt rates by integrating remote sensing data with a physically based snow model. To process the large volumes of remote sensing data involved and ensure transferability over other study areas, SNOWCOP will leverage innovative cloud-based infrastructures, such as the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem (CDSE). Additionally, the project will promote the use of EGNSS technology to power snow stations capable of simultaneously measuring SWE and liquid water content (LWC). SNOWCOP is expected to provide an innovative resource for stakeholders, offering unprecedented spatial and temporal insights into meltwater resources in the Andes and beyond. The lead partner of the project is the Institute for Earth Observation - Eurac Research (Italy). The other partners involved in the project are VITO Remote Sensing (Belgium), Universidad de Chile (Chile), ANavS (Germany), IANIGLA – CONICET (Argentina) and Mountain Research Initiative – GEO Mountains (Switzerland).
