About The Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC)

The Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC) is a global public-private partnership dedicated to accelerating drug discovery by elucidating the functions of all human proteins. Established in 2003 as a UK-registered charity with headquarters in Toronto, Canada, SGC’s pioneering open science model for protein science, chemical biology and drug discovery adheres to the principles that all data, reagents and tools generated by SGC scientists must be made publicly available. SGC is currently one of the largest and longest-running biomedical research consortia in the world with current contributions from nine Pharma industry members. Operating from leading academic institutions worldwide—including Goethe University Frankfurt, Karolinska Institutet, McGill University, University College London, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Toronto, and the University of Campinas (UNICAMP)—SGC's network comprises approximately 250 scientists. This collaborative framework bridges academia and industry, uniting experts to advance our understanding of human biology and expedite the development of new therapeutics. Over the past two decades, SGC has made significant contributions to the scientific community, including the determination of thousands of protein structures and the development of numerous chemical probes. By focusing on understudied areas of the human genome, SGC provides essential tools and data that empower researchers worldwide to explore novel biological pathways and potential drug targets. Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, SGC is committed to leveraging advancements in machine learning and computational biology to transform early drug discovery. By scaling up efforts in collaboration with the computational community, SGC aims to generate, format, and disseminate high-quality data that will democratize drug discovery.
