SuPER team

The Sustainable Process Engineering Research team has been founded by Professor Flavio Manenti and Professor Carlo Pirola in 2014 by unifying two former relevant groups on Chemical Plants: – the Leonardo Chemical Engineering group at the CMIC Dept. “Giulio Natta” of Politecnico di Milano; – and the Chemical Plants and Industrial Chemistry group at the Chemistry Dept. of Universita’ degli Studi di Milano; achieving an interinstitutional and interdisciplinary status and critical mass. Despite its recent birth, the SuPER Team has inherited skills, competences, codes, and plants from its former pioneers: Professor Vittorio Ragaini and Professor Giuseppe Biardi for the Chemical Plants, Professor Mario Dente and Professor Eliseo Ranzi for kinetic- and reactor-scale activities, Professor Sauro Pierucci and Professor Maurizio Rovaglio for reactor- and process-scale activities, and Professor Guido Buzzi-Ferraris for numerical methods. Dissemination and networking targets of the SuPER Team progressively attracted interests and appreciation and, nowadays, it consists of 8 permanent staff, 1 industrial consultant, and 10 to 20 Ph.D. and Post-doc collaborators (including visitors), with about 800 m2 of laboratories, computing facilities, spin-offs, and it is active in the industrial chemistry and chemical engineering for both fundamental research and industrial applications in the process and energy industry with special focus on technological advances. Since the future of academic and industrial research will involve more and more inter-disciplinary aspects, the strength of our team rely on the complementary skills owned by the original groups: the experimental and analytical potential of Industrial Chemistry is now synergistically coupled with the modeling and optimization methodologies of the Chemical Engineering. This peculiar privilege allows us to address each research project in a unified way and with a broader overview of the chemical, physical, and biological phenomena.
