Molecular diagnostics and infectious disease medicine are today relying on antibody-based methods. These are far from perfect. Producing high quality antibodies take time, they are expensive and not very stable. This is especially critical in a worldwide epidemic where rapid field testing is critical for limiting spreading of the disease. Moreover, methods are lacking for a number of interesting molecules that indicate specific diseases. Robust synthetic receptors that can be mass produced at low cost offers a solution to this problem.
