About Territorial Empathy

Territorial Empathy strives to promote spatial justice by cultivating empathetic design that is deeply rooted in cultural responsiveness, anti-racism, and anti-bias practices. Only through these principles can we work towards dismantling systemic inequities. Our collective, consisting of architects, urbanists, and researchers from diverse backgrounds, actively engages with often overlooked communities to co-create thriving, just, and resilient spaces. Conflict cannot exist without dehumanization. It fundamentally relies on “othering,” the systematic use of a device that demarcates a difference between an “us” and a “them”. These devices can range from racial and socioeconomic differentiation. Similarly, territorial conflict is based on the “this is ‘ours’ and that is ‘theirs’,” phenomenon which is pervasive throughout the built environment. This is evident in neighborhoods, cities, and nation-states. Therefore, the logical antidote to conflict is empathy. If the conflict is spatial, then so too must be empathy. At Territorial Empathy, we aim to spatialize “othering” and identify opportunities for empathy. Through this methodology, we aim to advocate for mediation, equity, and resolution. Territorial Empathy is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization under Federal Tax ID # 83-4145242.
