Our mission is to promote awareness of spina bifida and to collaborate with organizations serving the global spina bifida and hydrocephalus community to address their most pressing needs and connect them with resources.
Using funds we have raised and connections we have made in the global spina bifida community, The Laurita Spina Bifida Project has made the following contributions:
• Purchased two locally-manufactured wheelchairs and one walker for children in dire need in Tanzania
• Purchased life-saving medicine for a 2-year-old with severe hydrocephalus in Tanzania
• Paid for 4 mobility devices and a white cane (for a blind child) for children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in Mwanza, Tanzania, as well as transportation for medical care
• Shipped 1,000 catheters donated by a medical company to a children’s hospital in Nicaragua, thanks to the collaboration of neurosurgeon Dr. Juan Bosco in Managua.
• Connected an organization in the Dominican Republic with a Belgium-based organization which donated 20 shunts to Dominican children with hydrocephalus
• Using $7,000 we have raised and donated so far, occupational therapist Ambrose and his NGO are in the process of building an accessible, inclusive school and rehabilitation center that will serve at least 162 children with and without disabilities, including boarding for those from remote villages.
