About Teach India

The Times of India is India’s most-read English newspaper. More than 13.5 million readers wake up to one of its 13 editions every morning. With a daily circulation of more than 4 million copies, it is the world’s largest-selling English newspaper. Teach India (CSR initiative of The Times of India) Teach India was started through the knowledge that Times of India was a cornerstone brand of the Indian fabric of life. It was the brainchild of Ms. Trishla Jain, The stake holders decided that instead of expending their resources on multiple causes, it would be better to focus on one cause and give it their best. After extensive debate they narrowed down to the cause of teaching English to urban underprivileged youth. English being the language of communication, it would be the enabler to lift a family into a better lifestyle, offering better job opportunities to the youth, After an extensive needs analysis done by the appointed knowledge partner, British Council, a syllabus and a training program was finalised. It was determined that the volunteers would have to compulsarily attend the 8-day training in order to be well-equipped to deliver the curriculum. The teaching cycle would last for 2.5 months and would follow the total immersion technique where only English would be used in the classroom. The curriculum and training was made interactive with group work, pair work, extempore speaking, games, warmers and a student talk time of 80%. The volunteers had to fill in a detailed application form and were then grilled via 2 telephonic interviews regarding their commitment. Teach India started with a soft-launch in Delhi in 2010, followed by Mumbai in 2011. Pune followed in 2018 and Bengaluru in 2019. By 2021, Teach India had trained over 1Lac youth and provided jobs to over 50,000. Seeing the success of the program, the Teach India team was contacted by the National Payment Council of India, HP, HCL and Vicco to execute their own outreach programs.
