We are the Transportation Engineering Division at the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras—one of India’s premier institutions for engineering education and research. Our Division brings together a distinguished group of faculty, researchers, and students dedicated to advancing the science and practice of transportation systems. Our core areas of expertise span Pavement Engineering, Traffic and Highway Engineering, and Transportation Planning, enabling a holistic approach to addressing the multifaceted challenges of mobility, infrastructure, and urbanization. From developing sustainable and durable pavement materials to modelling intelligent transportation systems and shaping policy through advanced planning tools, we aim to create transformative solutions for India and the global community. We actively engage in cutting-edge research, industry collaborations, and government-sponsored initiatives that contribute to national priorities such as road safety, smart mobility, climate-resilient infrastructure, and data-driven planning. Our labs are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that support experimental studies, fieldwork, and simulation-based research. Our students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, benefit from a rigorous curriculum combined with opportunities for hands-on learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and exposure to real-world transportation problems. Many go on to become leaders in academia, industry, and public service.
