Since 1970, UDAYAN has dedicated its service towards children who are from various leprosy colonies. Udayan is place where we provide a safe, conducive and child friendly environment to children affected with leprosy, and to the children whose families are affected with Leprosy. Udayan premises consists of 8 acres of lush, green land, with the facility of Medical centre, Udayan Vidyalaya for primary education, Recreational rooms, Library, Kitchen & Dining hall and plenty of playing grounds for 300 children (capacity of 200 Boys & 100 Girls). The unconditional love, protection and care of House Mothers and House Brothers enable the children to lead healthy, respectable, productive lives and become a responsible citizen. There are 32 leprosy colonies spread all over West Bengal, in almost all the places, the colonies are situated on the outskirts of the city with limited general facilities. This creates an unhygienic and infectious environment. The children of the families of these colonies have limited education opportunities, with limited basic rights of human entity. UDAYAN’s intervention brings the children out of degrading living conditions and keeps them away from the social binding of stigma about the disease ‘Leprosy’. In Udayan children realize their full human potential; we nurture their capabilities and improve their competencies. Essential life-support system involves a place for safe and loving shelter, nutritious food, hygienic environment, medical care, socio-ethical moral values, quality education, skill building and professional career development, vocational training and higher educations. All children of Udayan are enrolled in local schools as per the age appropriate classes, whilst UDAYAN operates a primary school where Bengali is the language of instruction. Scholarships and stipend are provided to the children to attend college or vocational training institutes, and supported into finding respectable, dignified jobs.
