About Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Minnesota

Established in 1891, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was one of the first in the country. Prominent alumni include the founder of Medtronic, Earl Bakken, inventor of Cheerios, Lester Borchardt, and the "father" of the supercomputer, Seymour Cray. The Department offers two undergraduate degrees accredited by ABET, and two graduate degrees. Our degree programs are consistently ranked among the top 20 electrical and computer engineering programs in the United States. All our classes are taught by full-time faculty. Given the interdisciplinary nature of our research areas, our faculty collaborate with several departments, centers and institutions on campus. This gives our faculty and students access to state-of-the-art research facilities such as the Minnesota Nano Center, Digital Technology Center, Medical Devices Center, and others.
