THE PURPOSE OF THE FSU a) To contribute to the promotion of the objectives of the charter of the United Nations, in particular, by the efficient discharge of the functions assigned to the Field Staff of the United Nations Secretariat. b) To promote and safeguard the rights, interests and welfare of all International Field Staff. c) To maintain relations and cooperation with staff organizations of the United Nations Common System. The FSU works to protect staff rights though information sharing and working with our various partners to ensure that those rights are respected. We participate in the inter-agency bodies that make decisions about conditions of service and influence those decisions through discussions and technical papers to support staff positions. We have and continue to contribute to: • improve the internal system of justice and the appeals process • better security in all duty stations, especially for all staff at high-risk duty stations • enhance and protect the staff/management consultative process • Preserve staff rights when organizations reform and re-profile • Enhance the voice of staff in interagency bodies • Obtain the release of detained staff and provide assistance to their family members • Change the rules governing contractual arrangements • Successfully challenge proposed cuts in pensions, salaries and other entitlements and secure a more equitable adjustment for pension beneficiaries • Obtain an equitable and harmonized approach with regard to allowances and benefits • Eliminate deductions from base salary (negative post adjustment multipliers) • Improve the hardship and mobility scheme • Extend the rental subsidy scheme to field duty stations • Provide leave for parents in cases of child adoption • Secure periodic upward adjustments in the amount of education grant
