About UNIC PROJECT

𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗖 (Understanding Non-CO₂ Impacts of deCarbonised aviation) is a European Union and Swiss-funded research project that aims to improve our understanding of aviation’s non-CO₂ climate effects, enabling a more accurate assessment of the full scope of aviation impacts on climate 🔎 Why focus on 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗖𝗢₂ effects? Aviation contributes approximately 3–4% of total anthropogenic radiative forcing, with up to two-thirds estimated to originate from non-CO₂ emissions, with contrail and contrail-cloud formation having the largest share of these 🔬 What does UNIC do? UNIC’s core goals are to deliver new scientific knowledge and tools to assess how these non-CO₂ emissions - including particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and water vapour — impact the climate through contrail and cloud formation, as well as investigate the role of lubrication oil venting in these processes To reach these goals, UNIC focuses on four objectives: ✈️Close data gaps in aviation non-CO₂ emissions measurement ✈️Study the impacts of fuels like SAF and H₂ on non-CO₂ emissions ✈️Advance models to better reflect aerosol-cloud interactions ✈️Support evidence-based policy making with scientific insight Project partners include Office National d’Études et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA), Env-isa, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Reading, Cardiff University, University of Helsinki (Helsingin yliopisto), Tampere University (Tampereen korkeakoulusäätiö sr), Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (Sveriges meteorologiska och hydrologiska institut), Zurich University of Applied Sciences (Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften), National Research Council Canada, and Pegasor Oy Follow us for project updates, scientific insights, and collaborative progress across the UNIC consortium This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe Research and innovation program under grant agreement No: 101192598
