The French Network of Marine Universities (RUM) was created in 2011 to promote high-level research and higher education in marine sciences. By developing relations between our establishments, the RUM aims to increase the national, European and international visibility of French universities operating in the field of Marine Sciences.
On the one hand, to offer students a centralized access point to university courses in this fundamentally interdisciplinary field, encompassing as comprehensively as possible the various degree, master's and doctoral courses available within the 17 establishments of the Network.
Secondly, to coordinate our actions in Higher Education and Research by ensuring unified representation of our establishments within various national, European or international bodies.
Incidentally, the RUM highlighted the importance and overall involvement, both human and financial, of the Universities in the French marine science and technology community as a whole. There are as many teacher-researchers (approx. 1200 FTE) as researchers working in these various fields, a fact often ignored by the Universities themselves.
