University of York Drama Society

The University of York’s Drama Society has been producing plays for over 50 years and we pride ourselves as being one of the most active drama societies in the country. We put on 8 weekend shows and 9 ODN’s a term, and including some one off shows such as our Summer Solstice event, this totals over 50 shows a year. DramaSoc is primarily a platform for actors, directors, producers, writers, technicians, stage hands and designers to band together to create theatre in any form you want to explore. Over the years we’ve had a wide range of members, all wonderfully talented in their fortes, including Simon Stephens, Anthony Horowitz, Nick Payne and Greg Dyke, ex-chancellor of the university, all going on to achieve distinguished, successful careers. Additionally, we proudly help fund our independent theatre companies diffuse across the country to visit festivals, most frequently the Edinburgh Fringe. In 2013 and 2015, we hosted the notable Inter University Drama Festival with other drama societies from near and afar in attendance, and industry professionals contributing their knowledge and expertise through workshops. With the generous support from our alumni and students union, we can make all these wonderful things happen and keep our black box theatre, The Drama Barn, up and running. This society above all is a family of people who like theatre. It is a non-judgement, free space to express, create and explore. The community that has been created by the generations before you and I has become so important to many people who seem to accidentally fall into place here.
