The defining feature of a healthy team is a culture in which people actively seek and receive help with humility no matter their place in the hierarchy. People feel psychologically safe to speak honestly and sensitively with one another and are comfortable discussing their struggles and shortcomings. At Upbuild, we see that it is the ego that gets in the way of trust. The ego expresses itself in the form of proving and defending, rather than acknowledging and understanding. Through the practice of “processed vulnerability,” we can build a framework and language to speak about our underlying motivations and insecurities, and thus begin to take off our ego masks. Over time, as people feel increasingly comfortable being themselves and communicating authentically what they’re going through, a natural sense of trust gathers momentum. This leads to nourishing relationships, increased ease in making decisions, greater growth, and a climate characterized by an infectious sense of collaboration.
