Reef Grazer Research

Reef Grazer Research company information, Employees & Contact Information

The Reef Grazer Research group of Van Hall Larenstein, University of Applied sciences is actively working to restore the balance between algae and coral reefs by enhancing the populations of Diadema antillarum, long-spined sea urchin, a crucial herbivore that was nearly wiped out in 1983 due to an unknown disease. These urchins are vital for algae control and help support coral settlement and growth. Additionally, the we are exploring the feasibility of enhancing the populations of other native herbivorous grazing species, such as the Caribbean king crab (M. spinosissimus), whelk (C. Pica), and white sea urchin (T. ventricosus), to further boost grazing pressure and aid in reef restoration.
