The school began operations on September 1, 1918 as the Royal Polish School for Ex-Soldiers in the building of K. Kreczmar at 41 Wilcza St. It was a middle school with a humanities profile, which enrolled former soldiers who had fought in World War I. In 1922, the nature of the school was changed to a gymnasium for the general public, and the name was changed to the Prince Józef Poniatowski State Gymnasium. In February 1924, its headquarters were moved to the building of the Joachim Lelewel State Gymnasium at 53 Zlota St. On February 1, 1931, the school obtained premises in the building of the Władysław IV Gymnasium, while on September 15 it was moved to the building at 16 Lisa Kula St., at the corner of Rokitna St. in Zoliborz. On July 1, 1938, the school's name was changed to the 5th Prince Józef Poniatowski State Lyceum and Gymnasium. Classes were held until November 15, 1939. After the closure of the school, clandestine teaching began in small sets of students. It lasted until the Warsaw Uprising. Since February 1, 1945, the school resumed its activities in a building at 10 Inwalidow Square. After the war, Poniatówka received a floor in the building of the 14th Aleksandra Pilsudska Gymnasium and High School. In September, the school was transformed into the Prince Joseph Poniatowski Male School. In 1948, a merger was made with school No. 22 at 1 Szymanowska St. The new institution was renamed: the Ks. J. Poniatowski State 11-Year-Old Elementary and High School. On September 1, 1961, the school was split. Some of the classes were moved to the building on 1 Konwiktorska Street, while the remaining classes were transformed into the Józef Poniatowski High School, with its seat on 1 Szymanowska Street. In 1975 the school changed its seat for the last time. It now occupies the building of the former elementary school at 8 Nowolipie Street. On October 17, 1988, the name of the school was supplemented by adding the title of the patron, and from now on the school is call
