The Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra (VMO) is a non-profit society and registered charitable organization that is devoted to creating performing opportunities for young professionals alongside seasoned leading musicians that also act as mentors for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Vancouver Opera Orchestra.
VMO is a fully professional orchestra under the American Federation of Musicians/Vancouver Musician’s Association since 2009. The primary focus is to provide performing opportunities in a professional schedule and setting through repertoires that are commonly asked on auditions for major orchestras. Professional mentors lead their sections through rehearsals and performances, in addition to occasional sectional rehearsals, where expertise is perfected. Soloists who are selected to perform with the orchestra are leading soloists in Canada, as well as young emerging musicians who otherwise deserve a platform to showcase their talents. Soloists and mentors, who are engaged from abroad demonstrate their talents, also leverage the space in providing cultural exchange through masterclasses, seminars, and sectional rehearsals. VMO offers opportunities to in-house assistant conductor(s) to engage with audiences during pre-concert talks.
The orchestra is actively promoting new works by Canadian composers and currently works with d a Canadian composer-in-residence to create new programmes. VMO produces innovative outreaches to engage and encourage young families to attend orchestral concerts. It also develops regular educational outreaches for elementary and secondary schools to provide workshops, presentations and seminars to ensure the growth and continuation of the next generation of musicians and audiences.
