About Stuart Martin
To get straight to the point – I’m a communicator. My first love in life was performance. I love putting the hours in to prepare for a recital, show or concert, which ultimately led me to get a Bachelor of Music in piano and a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting. As I developed my conducting skills, I started a scrappy indie opera company, suitably called Stu&Jess Productions. We produced operas in found spaces, where you name it, we did it. From wiring antique lighting to spending hours reworking thickly orchestrated music for reduced orchestra, to writing press releases and coordinating interviews ahead of the show. I never thought of these skills as more than an extension of music-making and performance. Coming back to Vancouver after my masters, while I continued to conduct professionally with a professional orchestra, the Surrey City Orchestra, the speed at which I was consuming and learning music in university had quickly dissipated – and I needed to be busy. After being told I was well suited to a career in PR and initially balking at the idea, I took a chance and landed a job at Talk Shop Media. Who knew my unusual skill set of standing in front of a large group of people, communicating with them through body language and gesture, would lend itself to a career in communications.From developing campaigns, project management, relationship building, uncovering that gem of a story, handling excessive amounts of stress as you build up to launch, hustling hard to make it happen, to the adrenaline rush of making everything come to reality – all of my music experiences have been found in my work in public relations.
