Wenjüe Lu

We aim to combine authentic traditional art, while retaining its unique historical and cultural significance, with the aesthetic of contemporary art driven by emotive expressions to establish an artistic collective that defies singular definition— focusing simultaneously and inter-sectionally on slow fashion, modern art, exhibitions, and cultural workshops, Studio Wenjüe Lu was established in 2020 seeking to recover what is being overlooked by this fast-paced time. We aim to emphasize the rediscovery and the cherishing of hand-weaving and traditional folk craftsmanship while respecting the natural state of different fibers, from cotton, silk, to linen, hemp… Adopting the fabrics as one of the rhetorical devices within the Wenjüe Lu design language. While shining a light on the nuance of different layers of shade in natural fibers, allowing the differentiating of the fabric production from lot to lot to serve as features of our works alongside the appreciation for the normalizing of imperfections, as they are part of the natural and separate themselves from the artificial perfections. We do not practice fashion, we wish to separate garment from its current mode of definition, to distinguish between art and commodity, to inject a sense of slowness in an ever-accelerating world. We make one collection a year. From every beginning of January, to its corresponding end in December, together each piece born in between becomes the collection. We do not try to predict trends; we take all the time we need to realize each work of art; we try to move continuously with the passing time and truth; an eternal companionship between garment and body actualized, as what remains in the end and returns to the land; our collections are made with the intention for each piece to last, with every use, every wear.
