The WKV Group was established through the creation and consolidation of several companies many years ago. The acronym "WKV" represents "Wimalasurendra, Kehelgamu Oya, Viduliya," honoring D.J. Wimalasurendra, widely regarded as the "Father of Hydropower" in Sri Lanka. This name reflects Mr. Wimalasurendra's groundbreaking proposal in 1918 to harness the water resources of the Maskeli Oya and Kehelgamu Oya rivers to generate 114.5 MW of electricity, known as "Viduliya" in Sinhala. In 1950, he successfully completed the "Laxapana Hydro Power Scheme", which paved the way for numerous hydropower projects, ultimately leading Sri Lanka to achieve electricity self-sufficiency and bolstering its economy.
