Evenmens richt zich sinds 1981 als professionele organisatie op de informele zorg. Informele zorg is zorg die onbetaald en niet beroepshalve wordt verricht en waarvoor geen indicatie nodig is, zoals mantelzorg en vrijwilligerszorg.
Evenmens is een zelfstandige, onafhankelijke en laagdrempelige organisatie met een goede naam bij mantelzorgers, zorgvragers, zorgvrijwilligers en stagiairs. Tevens is Evenmens een betrouwbare partner voor de gemeenten, de provincie en het ministerie van VWS, die als opdrachtgever fungeren. Door nauwe samenwerking met de zorg- of Wmo loketten en lokale welzijns- en zorgorganisaties wordt invulling gegeven aan in de Wmo genoemde basisfuncties zorgvrijwilligerswerk en mantelzorg en het verbinden van vraag en aanbod.
De preventieve werkwijze die Evenmens hanteert leidt ertoe dat het beroep op formele en dure zorgvoorzieningen kan worden uitgesteld of zelfs voorkomen.
