Er is 50% kans op het genetisch doorgeven van het gendefect aan de volgende generatie en steeds in ernstiger vorm. Daardoor worden juist kinderen het hardst getroffen. Zij hebben de meest ernstige variant en daar bovenop hebben meer mensen in hun familie ook MD, waaronder in ieder geval één van hun ouders. Uit recent onderzoek blijkt dat naar schatting wereldwijd 1 op de 2.100 mensen MD heeft en is daarmee de meest voorkomende spierziekte. Toch is MD veelal onbekend, ook onder artsen. Naast de spieren tast MD belangrijke organen aan zoals bijvoorbeeld de longen, de hersenen en het hart. MD is dodelijk. Voor MD is nog geen medicijn.
