At 16, I needed some clarity and outlined my goals on my bedroom door… in permanent marker. I wrote "I will…" at the top of the door and started bulleting off my ambitions. My sweet mother did not share my enthusiasm when she saw it.Outside of some personal goals like getting married, I wrote down three that I apply to everything I do. "I will… challenge myself with every opportunity""I will… be successful by loving what I do""I will… one day inspire thousands of people to become the best they can be"I've had some amazing opportunities in my life, opportunities to be vulnerable, to be mentored, to be a leader. With all of these, I found that the challenge was not just in taking the opportunity, but creating it.In a job interview, I was asked why I dropped out of college. My nerves spoke for me, and I quickly responded, "It was hard." I thought about that for a day or two, and I finally realized why I said it. I didn't drop out of college because college was hard. I dropped out because dropping out was hard.It took a lot to accept that maybe the normal path wasn't the path for me. Everyone told me it was risky to leave the trail professionals are "supposed" to follow. For me, it was riskier to stay on it.I wasn't going to compromise my goal of being successful if I hated what I was doing.I took to creating opportunities that weren't laid out in classes or internships. I cold emailed professionals I looked up to and secured mentorships. I experimented with businesses, learned, tried, failed, succeeded; all the while, I was loving what I did.Now, I find myself pursuing another opportunity to challenge myself with. All to one day, inspire thousands of people to become the best they can be.
