The most important aspects of my life are centred around belonging and stability. I came to this conclusion after using ACT values cards, which I have since used with many clients in my time working in AOD to help them to live a life that works for them. I came to community services, in an effort to find belonging during what was meant to be a six month break studying a Bachelor of Media and Communications. Something to fill my time and reconnect me the community I had moved from just one year prior, ended up being the perfect space to live aligned to my core values, before I even knew what they were. Within a few months I was advocating for youth in my local community in the wake of a suicide contagion to all levels of government, consulting with local organisations to strengthen the community of support around the youth and engaging with all aspects of event planning and management around that years Youth Week celebrations. Before I had time to catch my breath I had changed degrees, and started my career as a Youth and Community professional as a generalist in drop in hubs and at events. I have worked in specialist roles focused on working with youth who are experiencing challenges due to their substance use, families who are experiencing conflict and breakdown with their teenage children, and psychosocial mental health recovery in an outpatient and residential setting. These very serious sounding roles were multifaceted. I was a case worker, counsellor, drama club facilitator, event planner/manager/coordinator, advocate, liaison, Tuning into Teens educator and truely whatever else the needs of my clients and community required of me.Now I am channeling my more specialist knowledge, into a more generalist role with Carers NSW. I am the first contact with the Carer Gateway, assessing carers needs and service matching from the services available under the Carer Gateway and providing suggestions of external services if ours cannot meet the carers needs. In addition to my core responsibilities I am working to strengthen our organisations capacity to provide a safe, stable environment where all carers belong through active work with the Diversity and Inclusion Group and the Reconciliation Action Plan Committee. My current goal is to establish a sense of stability for myself in the service landscape on the Coffs Coast after finding my feet in the role, while continuing to create stability and belonging for individuals and communities.
