Police Sergeant - Custody
CurrentAs a Custody Sergeant, I manage the custody suite with a primary focus on the care and welfare of detained persons. I hold the responsibility to authorise or refuse the detention of individuals brought before me. My role involves ensuring strict adherence to the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) Codes of Practice regarding the rights and treatment of arrested individuals.Key Accountabilities:Implement all relevant legislation and enforce policies and procedures to maintain high standards of security and safety within the Custody Suite.Manage the process of obtaining fingerprints, photographs, DNA, and other biometric samples from detainees, ensuring compliance with legislation and guidelines.Oversee cell searches, damage reporting, and repair procedures to maintain a safe custody facility.Supervise physical searches of detainees, including personal possessions, in accordance with legislation and policies.Conduct reviews of detention, track investigation progress, and report information to ensure detainees are held in accordance with legislation.Oversee visits by official representatives and relatives, ensuring continuous security compliance.Support representatives from various areas, such as legal advisors and healthcare, to ensure the proper care and movement of detainees in compliance with procedures.Conduct ongoing risk assessments of detainees to mitigate threats and risks to both detainees and custody staff.Perform risk assessments prior to detainee releases to ensure the safety of detainees and the public.Identify and mitigate potential organisational risks related to the custody suite.Monitor and address health and safety risks within the custody suite.Lead staff briefings during shift changeovers to relay essential information about the custody suite.Accurately and promptly maintain custody records, including Quality Assurance, to uphold data integrity and comply with PACE and relevant legislation.
