Employment Specialist
CurrentAfter I gather details of a student’s previous experience and current aspirations. An action plan is then drawn up and a time scale agreed before I research potential placements and contact likely companies to request work placements.Weekly progress made on placements for each student is fed back to the employment team and reviewed taking into account progress on programme. When a placement is sourced an interview is set up for the student to attend, informing tutors and confirming potential dates before amending timetables. At the interview, the placement is confirmed including hours, days, duties and targets set. A health and safety risk assessment of the company is also completed, confidentiality agreement signed and equal opportunities policy obtained.I then arrange transport to and from placement, lunch arrangements, install any IT requirements and book learning support if required. On the first day of placement I confirm by telephone that everything is in order and arrange for a placement visit to discuss progress with both employer and student. I then meet with the student at least once a month to discuss the work placement in our job seeking workshop and arrange further onsite visits to ensure targets are met and updated.A similar process is used for home block placements, usually for 2 weeks after the student has left college and with an employer that is likely to be able to offer employment.I personally support all students for a six month period after they leave RNIB College with job coaching in their new jobs or with job applications. I also line manage students that move onto our transitional employment scheme. This is where RNIB employ ex-students for six months on a paid contract within one of our partner organisations that I have sourced in a student’s home area.
