I am Deputy Director of the UTS Human Technology Institute, working with an amazing team of policy, technical and governance experts to help Australia realise a responsible, inclusive, and positive future with AI.I have spent the better part of my career leading large-scale initiatives and working with people whose passion and expertise lies at the intersection of research, industry, government and society. It is at this intersection where the incredible value and impact of genuine artificial intelligence innovation is perhaps most clearly seen – and also where the rubber of responsible AI strikes the road of real-world delivery.I have extensive senior leadership experience in all aspects of the co-design, delivery and reporting of large-scale multi-million-dollar research programs, including research that has brought together diverse teams from artificial intelligence, social science, statistics, electrical engineering, privacy and ethics disciplines. I have been fortunate enough to work with brilliant women and men from China, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Australia, India, Western Europe, South America and North America in doing so and recognise the incredible value that cultural differentiation brings to a team, and the more complete view of a problem that is enabled when we break out of cultural and technical silos. Similarly, I firmly believe that research conducted in remove from its ultimate users and those impacted by its deployment will most often deliver unsatisfying outcomes, and I devote a large portion of my professional life to working closely with industry and government leaders to ensure our work is genuinely and lastingly aligned with need.Beyond program design and delivery, I have had a long career in capability development and management, working with researchers to see their careers grow and evolve in a way that complements not just their technical skillset and the needs of a rapidly evolving research sector, but that also resonates with their personal passions and dreams. Whether it is an enthusiastic undergraduate entering the workforce for the first time or a researcher with decades of experience and a stirring reputation, I have always valued working closely with my team members to understand who they are, what matters to them and how they can best deliver value for their colleagues and their projects.
