My goal, as a colleague of mine once said, is to "automate my self out of a job". What is so exciting about software right now, is that we are really beginning to be able to automate and streamline everything, particularly infrastructure. That is amazing.My quick summary, and how I got to the point of finding automation so enthralling is this: Came out of San Francisco State University after several years of taking classes and doing all kinds of jobs throughout their IT department looking for a gig in development. I got into Asurion as an Operations Engineer and found I liked Ops much better. Developers may become quite proficient with their language(s) and know about software, while Ops has the opportunity to get their hands dirty with capital-T Technology. That is, I was working with networking issues from routing concerns to setting up SSL, system issues from mounting drives to process control, build issues from packaging code to deploying it, and everything in between, including managing a sizable AWS footprint. In short, as a DevOps Engineer I get to have my hand in everything from maintaining and learning the current technologies to driving the company towards the latest and greatest.My absolute dream position is always to work with great people on taking the team from manually getting code to production to a well oiled machine cranking out well tested, solid software as soon as it is written. And at that point I will have automated myself out of a job. So, in short, my dream position is one in which I make myself obsolete at the end. Oh well, such is life I suppose :)
