ProfessorYork University Jul 2009 - PresentI teach undergraduate courses in Evolution, Population Ecology, Conservation Biology, and Animal Migration, and while at York I have also taught field courses in Algonquin Park (Ornithology and Biodiversity) and in Belize (Tropical Ecology) for the Ontario Universities Program in Field Biology. I was the 2014 recipient of the Faculty of Science Excellence in Teaching Award.I continue to study bird migration as time and funds allow, with particular interest in the conservation of migratory species and effective ways of monitoring them. With the help of senior undergrads, I am currently studying differences in the migration patterns of one-year-old versus older songbirds, which is an important consideration for developing dependable migration monitoring programs.I serve the university community in diverse ways, recently serving on Petitions, Tenure and Promotion, and Teaching Committees, and serving for two years (including 2014-15) as Chair of Faculty Council. I volunteer in the community, especially in areas related to conservation and public education. I annually conduct Breeding Bird Surveys (Environment Canada). I lead field trips for the public. I have a federal Bird Banding permit that I use to monitor declining whip-poor-wills and also to train undergraduate students. I also contribute to various citizen science databases. -
