Summers spent in Newport, RI made me fall in love with our country’s rich history and its cultural, physical, and intellectual resources. Majoring in History at the University at Buffalo was a natural extension of this passion, particularly as I began to focus upon the glorious Gilded Age that continues to this day to be on display in Newport as thousands of individuals each summer tour the famous mansion-like “cottages” and perhaps visit an ancient artifact in the form of the Newport Tower. In the back-to-back summers of 2007 and 2008, I had the exquisite good fortune to land a job with The Preservation Society of Newport County’s gift shop located in the “grandest” of Newport’s summer cottages, The Breakers, owned by the Vanderbilt family. I was thrilled to continually post the highest sales and customer service numbers in this position and I attribute it to the fact that I really wasn’t selling anything – I was simply inviting my customers to step back in time to an age where everything seemed possible. As an event planner seeking to conjoin organizational and relationship management skills with an appreciation for the preservation of our nation’s landmarks, I am a fervent believer that every marriage or anniversary, special birthday, or organizational triumph should be celebrated in a spot once brushed historically. Is there a better venue to be found anywhere?
