Allan is currently a specialty registrar in neurosurgery based at the Institute of Neurological Sciences in Glasgow. Allan’s interest in neurosurgery began during first year of medical school from a combination of undertaking a neuroanatomy block and subsequently a placement with Henry Marsh in London.Allan undertook an intercalated degree in clinical neuroscience and after graduating medical school undertook foundation placements in neurosurgery, A&E and general surgery. Following this he undertook a year of surgical training in cardiothoracic surgery. He then applied to neurosurgery national selection managing to secure his top ranked job.Allan undertook a Masters degree in neuroscience, followed by a postgraduate certificate in clinical medicine at Cambridge University.During medical school, with the initial support of Professor Sir Graham Teasdale, he founded the Glasgow Neuro Society in 2010. Over the subsequent six years he built up a reputable society which now has a leading international faculty of support from previous conference speakers which include the chief of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins, Henry Brem; the then director of paediatric neurosurgery at Hopkins, George Jallo; the then chief of neurosurgery at Harvard, Robert Martuza; as well as Professor Sir Graham Teasdale, Professor Charlie Teo, Professor James Goodrich, Professor Henry Marsh and pioneer of deep brain stimulation Professor Alim Louis Benabid. He also secured links and major funding to support the society’s activities from a range of leading international companies, from Emirates and British Airways to Virgin and Johnson & Johnson.Allan is a past member of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies Young Neurosurgeons Committee; previous member of the BMA patient liaison committee in London, and currently a GMC associate and examiner.
