I am currently funded on a fellowship grant awarded to me by the American Heart Association for my dissertation research. My project involves a multidisciplinary approach to studying the impact of maternal diet during pregnancy on neonatal outcomes, specifically body composition. I am investigating the role of maternal dietary niacin intake in the development of fetal fat accretion using mesenchymal (NOT embryonic) stem cell cultures, clinical testing of umbilical cord tissue, and population level analyses within the Healthy Start cohort (PI: Dana Dabelea).

Volunteers conducted screening surveys for research projects in the three adult ICUs at Oregon Health & Science University. Research projects included finding the optimum glucose range for ICU patients, VAP Bundle data collection, sepsis identification, and other related trials. In addition, volunteers were invited to join the doctors and residents on rounds.

Primary duty was to facilitate a class of middle school-aged girls who had been referred by their teachers because of behavior issues and special emotional needs. The focus of the program was to raise the girls' awareness of "girl aggression" and to provide them tools to diffuse and prevent aggression among girls.

The main task of this organization was to distribute clean syringes and other supplies to intravenous drug users in the region. Provided remediation for nursing and biology students who struggled academically in microbiology, general biology, anatomy, and physiology

Prepared the lab for class and individual experiments as instructed by the professor; duties included (but not limited to) setting up materials needed for each activity, growing cultures, dissecting specimens, and making solutions.

Conducted an evaluative, clinical investigation to determine the efficiency of the out-patient Department (OPD) at the Virika Hospital. In addition, the hypothesized correlation between the doctor's visits to the patients and the length of time the patients spent in the hospital was studied. Additional volunteer work included fulfilling the role of a nurse's assistant in the out-patient department where evaluation of initial patient condition, recording of vitals, and registration were conducted.

Designed and led a joint-effort project to raise money for the purchase of over two hundred treated mosquito nets with the intention of equiping every hospital bed in the Virika Hospital in Uganda (the project was sponsored by the University of Portland Student Nurses Association, the Biology Department, and the Department of Campus Ministry). The fundraising culminated in an educational seminar entitled "The Impact of Malaria on the Peoples of Uganda".

Facilitated class twice a week for college freshmen on "life as a college student". This curriculum included how to study for college exams, taking notes in lecture-style settings and other additional topics that pertained to college life.

Counseled second semester college freshmen on the academic and social aspects of college. Focus was on helping these individuals to self-evaluate and determine the best approach to solve their academic and social conflicts.

Worked with the director, Joshua Wright to develop workshops for children ages 5 - 13 and training sessions for counselors ages 15 - 19; conducted trainings, taught the Nutrition Workshop; developed health regulations for Arkansas 4-H Center; coordinated schedules for summer camp lodging and other necessary logistics; worked with adult volunteers. This position was part of an AmeriCorps tour that awarded a scholarship.
