About Alondra Torres

I aim to provide an integrated sociological and epidemiological approach to interpreting mental health-related processes and outcomes, mainly when influenced at the macro level. This includes systemic mechanisms that undergird health inequalities, such as the gaps I experienced when seeking mental healthcare in a rural environment. Using this knowledge, I plan to become a psychotherapist who can provide mental health services directly to my community while also contributing on a larger scale to developing clinical interventions and public policies that aid as upstream interventions. In the future, the research I plan to contribute to will focus on socioculturally competent mental health interventions, specifically for marginalized Latine, immigrant, and rural communities who have difficulty accessing adequate mental healthcare under our current psychological medical model.

Project Title: Establishing an Ingroup-Outgroup Bias Model in MiceFor this research project we aim to shed light on the phenomenon of in-group bias in mice, with the objective of understanding of the underlying neural circuit and cellular mechanisms of this social bias. Our focus on in-group bias specifically, can provide valuable insights into addressing health disparities in our society, as most research in this area has been conducted within the field of social psychology (Major et al., 2013). By understanding the development of in-group bias, we can potentially identify ways to mitigate it. This is especially critical in light of the growing divisiveness within our country and beyond, as history shows that such conflicts can negatively impact health outcomes and access to resources, particularly for individuals based on their group identity (Aberson et al., 2000; Perry et al., 2017).
