As a Biological Scientist in the Soil Microbiology program at UF-IFAS Southwest Florida Research and Education Center my duties consist of:• Purchase and manage laboratory equipment and supplies• Develop protocols and standard operating procedures for laboratory work• Independently conduct laboratory work such as DNA extractions, PCR, Gel electrophoresis, qPcr, etc.• Synthesize raw sequence data using QIIME software in order to obtain results• Aid in the planning of experiments• Field work including: soil sampling, applying bio stimulants to soil, and assisting with plant data collection when needed

NEON is a continental-scale ecological observation facility sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Neon is committed to gathering and synthesizing data on the impacts of climate change, land use change and invasive species on natural resources and biodiversity. My position was located within the field operations department of NEON. As a vegetation technician, I was responsible for carrying out over 10 protocols including: plant phenology, plant diversity, vegetation structure, leaf area index, coarse woody debris, soil, and leaf litter.

Farm Sanctuary’s seasonal tour guide positions offer a unique opportunity to work with a team of committed staff and volunteers focused on advocating for farm animals. As a tour guide, I assist with all aspects of Farm Sanctuary's Visitor Program activities and play a key role in educating the public on factory farming and a vegan lifestyle. My responsibilities include: providing visitor center and tour program needs from May through October, conducting public and special tours, staffing the gift shop, providing customer service to guests, assisting with Bed & Breakfast program including preparing breakfast, checking reservations, and answering questions guests may have before arriving via phone and email, and assisting with onsite sanctuary events, and outreach projects.

• Investigating the nutrient content of decomposing leaf litter belonging to two transgenic American chestnut types, a hybrid type, and a wild-type chestnut• Investigating the species of mycorrhizal fungi that colonize leaf litter of two transgenic American chestnut types and wild-type chestnut• Field work involving planting and collecting litterbags, and lab work involving nutrient analysis and mycorrhizal fungi DNA analysis

I teach a section of the Introduction to Soils Laboratory at ESF. The professor is not present at the time, and so I am in charge of lecturing, answering questions, and performing demonstrations on my own to a group of 20-40 undergraduates. The first half of the semester consists of field trips and the second half of the semester consists of laboratory analyses of soil properties.

Worked on a project to assist the GDSNWR in better controlling the hydrology of the Great Dismal Swamp by using NASA EOS and GIS.Worked on a project assisting the Oregon Department of Forestry with mapping the air quality after the Pole Creek fire that occurred on Sept. 9th, 2012. The Earthzine video featured below won first place in a national competition.

I worked on a project in the Giovannoni lab under PhD candidate Ryan McQuinn studying the effect of carotenoids on tomato fruit development. I took samples from ABA deficient mutants and ZDS knockouts at different times in the plants'​ development and measured a variety of carotenoids to see if a blockage in the carotenoid synthesis pathway would cause an increased amount of carotenoids in the pathway before that blockage. Results supported our hypothesis and I presented the findings at BTI's annual student symposium in the form of a powerpoint presentation.

Worked with a group under PhD student Wes Hudson to determine the best method for planting trees in created wetlands. Duties included weighing and identifying trees and roots, and inputting data into a spreadsheet.

I worked on a project testing the effect of cadmium on plant growth and reproductive success in flax plants, as well as testing the effect of mycchorizal fungi on the amounts of cadmium that was taken up by each part of the plant.
