Director, Emerging Leaders In Policy And Public Service - Elipps
ELIPPS -- Emerging Leaders in Policy and Public Service program is an interdisciplinary science and public policy program for students in STEM disciplines to engage in the process of policy making. The ELIPPS program is part of UC Davis' 21st century vision to have a School of Public Policy in Sacramento, leveraging campus' close proximity to the state capitol. Individuals with STEM backgrounds have specialized knowledge, skills and experience which are essential to craft science-related educational and public policies. Policy makers often rely on scientific expertise related to energy, climate, housing, transportation, water, health related issues, etc. The ELIPPS program has been designed to further populate the policy sector with young scientists from UC Davis and provide them with the education and skills to pursue a career in science and public policy. In directing and developing the ELIPPS program, some of my specific duties include:Conducting research on educational programs needed to prepare graduate students with STEM backgrounds for a career in science and public policy;Researching, advising on and implementing best practices to expand ELIPPS;Developing and teaching policy education seminars for credit to graduate and professional students;Developing a certification program in public and science policy;Creating fellowship and internship opportunities for graduate students in the STEM fields. I launched the ELIPPS CA Fellows program, which provided paid fellowships to eighteen graduate and professional students at UC Davis in public policy during the summer of 2015 and 2016.
