Beautiful accurate maps for Outdoor Recreation with a focus (for now) on Wilderness in western Montana. We also do custom maps for web and print. We specialize in custom map projects for regional nonprofits working on public lands advocacy and stewardship.Cairn Cartographics is a small family business, so I wear many hats. I participate in all aspects of map production from field data collection to final layout and design work. I manage wholesale accounts, maintain our e-commerce website, and handle all of our marketing and communications including our social media accounts and email newsletters.

I design base maps and feature layers for Gaia GPS, a premier outdoor recreation navigation application for web and mobile.•I process open source and proprietary data using a process based on the OpenMapTiles pipeline to create world-wide Mapbox vector tiles•I write and edit the many PostgreSQL queries to add or modify data in the vector tiles•I maintain Mapbox stylesheets for over a dozen basemaps based on those vector tiles. Each map has its own product goals while maintaining consistent cartographic brand •I write and edit makefiles and python scripts that automate the map update process. •I test all vector tile updates extensively to balance cartographic design and performance optimization.•I work closely with other engineers to build feature layer vector tiles based on customer needs and I create new and update existing Mapbox stylesheets for several dozen feature layers•I work closely with engineers and product managers to plan and scope cartographic work that advances company goals within agile development environment•I update existing and write new documentation for cartographic processes and workflows•Member of internal accessibility working group to address cartography-related accessibility concerns•Member of collaborative Trails Working Group alongside members of land management agencies, Open Street Map community members and navigation app representatives

I use industry standard software to create static and interactive maps and graphics to communicate NFWF's work for external facing communications and internal information sharing. I work within branding guidelines to design fact sheets, reports and presentations. I serve as a liaison between data science team and external affairs and work with both teams to utilize the organization's sprawling spatial data ecosystem which documents 20 years and $6.8 billion in grants.I implemented the use of Mapublisher and Geographic Imager to improve map branding and design and create a more streamlined workflow for map graphics. I worked with the digital media manager and web developer to implement interactive and dynamic visualizations within the content management system for the website. As a member of a small communications team at a large organization I assist as needed in managing the busy workflow. I write, edit and design a variety of communications materials ranging from fact sheets and grant slates to annual reports and development presentations. I coordinate with program leads and partners to create and edit pages on the website. I write social media posts, edit photos and adapt materials for web, print and social media.
