The aim of the last two weeks of the program were to find a social action project for the young people to complete. My team chose to renovate the Sea Cadets station in their local town. I helped them manage their time and plan their project and also plan and budget for what equipment they would need. The project was a complete success, the Sea Cadets station was completely renovated and as a team we managed to raise over £300 to make this possible. This role was very rewarding as I was able to see the changes this project made in the young people over just four weeks. They are now confident, able, independent, young adults ready to face any obstacles they may cross in the future. Show less

I gained a vast amount of skills through this experience that I believe are applicable to all areas of life. I also had the opportunity to attend a range of training courses while on placement that I am able to provide a list of with certificates. I often completed 1:1 assessments with service users (recovery stars, wellness recovery action plan) which lead to 1:1 appointments with clients involving desensitisation therapy, goal-setting and anxiety training.I worked within a multi-disciplinary team in which I was able to shadow many health professionals in their roles such as working with mental health nurses, advanced mental health practitioners, psychologists, psychotherapists, those involved with the criminal justice system, the Shaw Trust. I had the opportunity to complete a range of training courses such as mental health first aid, child and vulnerable adult protection, breakaway training, borderline personality course, challenging behaviour etc.I also had the opportunity to work within the Early Intervention into Psychosis Team (EIP) in which I was able to have a small caseload of clients that I personally worked with towards their goals. I also lead community groups alone and as a team with up to 15 clients per group. A big achievement for me whilst on placement was the organisation of a timetable for Mental Health Awareness Week 2014, for which I successfully timetabled a number of activities and classes for service users, the public and staff.
