As an executive in the CEO's office for one of the world's most admired companies, my experience is broad and deep beyond my core competencies of public relations and organizational communications. After my retirement from USAA, I opted for the nonprofit sector, serving as Executive Director of the Fiesta San Antonio Commission, where I had the opportunity to put a career of corporate executive experience to work for one of the largest and oldest nonprofit events in the nation. The Fiesta San Antonio Commission is the self-sufficient organizing hub for some 100 nonprofits producing 100 great events for 100 great causes and generating an economic impact of more than $340 million. These events help fund services to San Antonio citizens throughout the year and, importantly, bring the community together in celebration of San Antonio’s rich and diverse culture. With a small but mighty team, we reversed negative financial direction in one year through diligent expense review and management, immediately reducing planned expenditures by approximately $250K without cutting staff, and setting the course for prudent budgets going forward. We set a new direction as evidenced by a return of former Fiesta supporters, enthusiasm for new nonprofits to become involved, and we restored and grew relationships with sponsors and constituents. We successfully reengineered processes and instituted an environment of continuous improvement, facilitating best-ever collaboration with City of San Antonio, Participating Member Organizations, vendors and others. With my second retirement in 2020, I continue to put my skills and experience to work on nonprofit projects and am open to serving as an interim nonprofit leader or project manager.Specialties: Project Management, Strategic Planning, Operational Excellence, Brand, Change Management, Board Communications and Operations, Executive Staff Operations, Employee Communications and Engagement, Reputation Management, Social Media, Process Improvement, Corporate Responsibility, Media Relations, Crisis Communications, Speechwriting

I represented the CEO, consulting, collaborating and overseeing matters related to Communications, Marketing, Brand, Enterprise Strategy, HR, Corporate Responsibility, Social Media, CFO, and CAO (IT, Corporate Security, Corporate Services) and Events, and serve as the chief steward of clear dissemination of company values and strategic direction. The CEO sought my counsel on strategic matters of enterprise significance, such as reputation, employee engagement, organizational design and change management, and I help resolve priority, complex and sensitive issues. I provided quality control on all communications to the USAA Board of Directors and oversaw USAA’s strategic and operational plan communications, facilitating greater executive and employee understanding of and alignment with corporate direction. I established, staffed and managed our enterprise speechwriting center of excellence, raising the standard for external executive communications strategy and execution. I also reestablished enterprise external communications strategy and planning, moving from reactive to purposeful and proactive placement of the CEO and other senior executives as thought leaders.
San Antonio, Texas
I was initially recruited to Corporate Communications to establish the first integrated team of business-line and staff agency communications consultants, improving quality, alignment, prioritization and efficiency with half of the previous staff. My expertise in communications strategy and efficiency led to my next assignment of managing the operations of Corporate Communications, serving as chief of staff to the CCO and directing strategic and operational planning, manpower, budget, process integration and resource allocation. I guided organizational and resource changes, brought a cohesive approach to change management and provided executive oversight to ensure consistent and integrated messaging by our employee, member and public communications functions. With operations performing at its best ever, I was then asked to return to the enterprise partnerships internal client relations function and reinvigorate efficiency and effectiveness. In addition to managing that team, I organized USAA’s history and led development of our first corporate museum, built our enterprise crisis communication plan, created the information security policy and process, and led communications for a historic membership eligibility expansion, which tripled the size of USAA’s market.
San Antonio, Texas
I was responsible for the quality of all communications from or related to the CEO-Elect and subsequently the CEO, designing his internal communications strategy, schedule, events and tactics.I was the first of four communications professionals to meet expectations and be named to position permanently.
