In this role, I serve as interpreter and field naturalist aboard commercial puffin-watching tours in Muscongus Bay, as well as assist with implementing educational and birding programs at the Project Puffin Visitor Center.

In this position, I was able to interact with visitors and with my co-workers to help create a welcoming and positive outdoor experience. I was responsible for greeting and educating customers on the area and assisting them with rental equipment such as non-motorized boats (spring-fall) and cross-country skis (winter). As supervisor, I was responsible for overseeing daily operations as well as providing guidance to newer staff. As program instructor, I was responsible for creating and implementing outdoor recreation programs for the public and PSU students. Early in my time here, I was promoted to Facility Supervisor for my initiative to make organizational changes and attempts to increase connection & communication between staff.

In this role, I collaborated with a co-lead to lead two groups of ten incoming PSU first-year students on five-day backpacking trips to ease their transition to college & facilitate connection to others, to nature, and to self. Although this role did contain teaching elements regarding outdoor technical skills, it was also largely about promoting vulnerability and fostering connections, which allowed me to gain experience facilitating large-group conversations and team-building games.

Over the summer of 2021, I was able to spend my days working outside, both with plants and with people. I assisted with the management of daily (10.5 hours) physical operations of a plant nursery. Additionally, I collaborated to reorganize the nursery layout, allowing for an improved efficiency of daily operations and an easier customer experience. Advising customers on any inquiries or issues and overseeing the outdoor nursery was my pleasure to accomplish each day.
