Following a succesful tenure as a claims adjuster I was offered the opportunity to move into the commercial underwriting team to further my career. As a Commercial Strata Underwriter I was responsible for all aspects of the process including quoting new business, alterations and endorsements to cover and the renewal process. Following on from the reputation gained as a claims adjuster I was able to continue to develop my relationships with our key partners. Together we were able to assist each other in winning accounts and retaining business experiencing a healthy strike and retention rate. A proactive problem solving mindset offering our connections solutions for their clients and ensuring profitability within the portfolio.

Managing all facets of the claim process from lodgement, appointment of service providers, review of professional reports and authorising repairs, acceptance or otherwise of the claim. What I was able to bring to the role was an attention to detail, a diligent work ethic and extensive experience in insurance, in claims exposure and in life skills which allowed me to operate above market standards. This allowed me to enhance our brand and develop our relationships with our connections. Knowledge that their clients claims were being managed by an experienced operator in a timely fashion allowed our connections to have confidence in their recommendations for placement of cover.

My primary role was sales but I also worked within property management. As a sales specialist my role was dedicated to sourcing listings, engineering a marketing strategy, implementing the plan, and negotiating the sale of the property. I had the privilege of a very experienced mentor/principal and a group that offered ongoing training in marketing and negotiation techniques.I was successful in the role collecting sales awards in consecutive quarters leading into the GFC. With a family on the way and the time constraints that come with running your own business I decided the best move for myself and my family was a career within the insurance industry.

I've worked in numerous high pressure and labour intensive environments including claims teams operating in crisis management due to back log and yet my friends would say I have no idea of hard work till I've laboured with my hands. So I set myself to find out if there was any truth to the tale.At Roche Mining we manufactured Gravity Mineral Separation Spirals. I started in the worst role on the production team, the 'grinder'. As the grinder I was the final step before the spirals were ready for assembly, grinding the excess moulding and fibreglass. My work ethic, attention to detail and a quality outcome was quickly established. The role required an output of 13 spirals a day. I was grinding between 25-30 per day, in conjunction with the production team to ensure the highest quality. This of course led to additional training outside my booth in all facets of spiral production including the highly specialised role of poly sprayer becoming one of only four trained in the role. In the evenings I studied to get my Real Estate License.Though only a temporary role the exercise was worthwhile - proving to myself not only can I hack it in the environment but set new standards. With the right attitude and work ethic no challenge is beyond reach.

Moving to Perth as part of my plans to work around Australia the last thing I expected was the opportunity to expand my insurance knowledge working on accounts for large scale national clients operating on tailored ISR, Engineering and Rural policies. The insight gained on the workings of these large scale operations was an outcome I never expected from a claims role and something I am very grateful for. In all business there is the expectation of great service but as a young professional this role really highlighted the importance good relationship management plays in business - with all your clients and service providers.
