An early career in a technical environment working for Shop Direct Group gave me a lot of transferable skills and a loyal work ethic. 25 years working in a number of different roles from correspondence clerk to Computer Operations Technical Supervisor ended in December 2007 as the Business transfered to its current home in Speke and the majority of the Mancunian workforce were made redundant. I saw this as an opportunity to try different career option's including working as a self employed Gardener. On reflection the seasonal nature failed to provide a living wage for many months and I looked to the job market again for something new.In November 2008 my status as an employee returned as I accepted the post of Gravedigger with Leeds City Council.Skill set's that helped me secure the role were my driving license (including trailer), timekeeping, reliability, customer service and attention to detail. After working in the private sector for 25years a considerable period of readjustment took place. The public sector work ethic took a bit of getting used to. I still had my principles of getting the job done well, but a number of my colleagues had a different mind set.After 6 years, a colleagues personal injury claim ending with me giving evidence in a court case, it was time to move on. A brief spell in an administrative role with the Forestry section of Leeds City Councils Parks & Countryside team gave me new hope. I was given and managed responsibilities above my role so well, a business case to keep me was submitted by the management team to the directorate. Unfortunately LCC decreed it was not in line with council policy and was rejected.An opportunity arose via a telephone call I received from LCC markets service. I was invited for a test and interview to fill a recently vacated role in the Markets Information Centre.
