Following an intensive two month in-country training program, I was settled at a small village in central Ukraine, where I worked at a local school. While there, I organized and ran student clubs whose topics ranged from the English language and US culture and history to the German language, bonsai, Turkish, and a book club. The school faculty and I, using input from our pupils and the broader community, designed a community project, for which I wrote a successful federal grant which I managed throughout the project until it was completed. I also assisted with English lessons and Education Hours, in addition to my time spent with students during free periods, in which I served as a resource on American culture and taught games and the basics of sports such as American football, basketball, and Frisbee. During the summers, I worked at Peace Corps-affiliated camps, running sessions on gender, race, and volunteerism/project planning, as well as the training of trainers. I immersed myself into my local community and established strong relationships with the people I met there.

I assessed and subsequently reorganized and restructured the Language and Media Center languages library, adding materials to the online database and establishing a more streamlined filing system. I also worked on developing a visual display and providing input on better advertising the language services provided at the library.

While interning at the Urbandale Farms, I learned methods of localized sustainable gardening with an emphasis on organic gardening and companion planting while preparing harvested plants and flowers for sale at a local farmer’s market, intended to help alleviate issues of the urban food desert around Lansing, MI.

While at the Beal Garden, I maintained garden beds and worked to care for new installations, assisting in an overhaul of the plant support system, both in the preparatory and installation phases.I additionally worked on plantings, both in the planting of and care for annuals as well as the movement of the tropical plants collection from the nursery to the garden beds and vice-versa in the spring and fall semesters, respectively.
